For a long time now I’ve been wanting to delve into the deeper conversations that are really what shape the way we think and feel about food, and ultimately what we put on our plates. I talk to people all the time who are so tired of feeling frustrated, anxious and even helpless when it comes to food. They feel like they’re failing and they’re not sure why. It’s like they’re lost without a compass, constantly on the lookout for things that are going to harm them.

I can relate wholeheartedly. For the first three decades of my life, I thought I was doing the right thing by eating "light and healthy" processed foods, while all along fighting with my body and battling low self-esteem and constant anxiety. Food was the antithesis of nourishing to me at that point. 

But then I was forced, by two dire health threats in my 20s, to examine what I was eating and what it was doing to my body. And after several months of interviewing experts around the world, I had the answer -- seasonal veggies and whole grains cooked with healthy fats and rounded out by a bit of seafood or chicken or meat. 

Sounds simple, yet as we all know … it’s not. 

I detested veggies at the time and was terrified of fat, so the road to actually getting my plate to look like that was an adventure in and of itself and that journey is a large part of my book Nourished: A Memoir of Food, Faith and Enduring Love (with Recipes).

The totally unexpected surprise for me many months later, after I’d learned how to love those foods and looked forward to filling my plate with them, was the ripple effect that shift had on so many other areas of my life.

Yes, I lost weight (without even trying) and I was healthier (my lupus diagnosis was changed to fibromyalgia, and I rarely have flare-ups anymore). 

I also had more energy and clarity than I’d ever felt before. AND I felt more deeply connected in both my spiritual life and my relationships. Instead of wondering if I was making the right choices, I knew with certainty that I was, and I felt good about the impact they were having -- on me, on my family, on others around me, and even the environment. 

It turns out everything changed when my plate changed.

But I’ve discovered there’s more to unlocking that richer experience of food than just the mechanics.

I’m launching a beta version of my NOURISH Group Coaching Program, which will run 8 weeks, looking at seven different facets of food. We’ll be undoing false assumptions, busting myths that are hurting us, and shifting the paradigms that are holding us hostage. 

We’ll be teaming up the know-how and mindset needed to shift our habits with the practical to-do’s to make it happen. 

HERE’S HOW IT WILL WORK

Each week we’ll have a group video call where I’ll present the week’s topic and follow-up with Q&A and a check in. 

In between calls, you’ll dig into Ideas to Explore -- readings, videos, etc. -- along with a Mindset Mantra to help shift your thought patterns, and you can share thoughts and questions with me and your fellow sojourners in our Private Facebook Group. I’ll also be sending you Daily Encouragement texts to keep you on track :-).

We’ll also have a Take it to the Plate action each week, which will translate what we’re learning to the dinner table (yep, there will be recipes). And to reinforce your progress, we’ll have a special framework for recapping your week in your NOURISH journal.

Because this is a beta -- and because you’re my valentine --  I’m drastically slashing the price I’ll eventually be charging for this program. 

I’m trying to strike a balance … I get paid hundreds of dollars an hour doing one-on-one coaching, and thousands for my speaking and teaching gigs. WEEK 1
Introduction and orientation. We’ll talk about how to best show up for these 8 weeks, and what you can expect in return. I’ll also share some surprising information about how we’re not only going to be changing our thoughts, habits, actions and outlook … we’re literally going to be changing our brains. 

WEEK 2
Food Is … Connection to our deeper selves
With each meal, we’re being invited into communion. Are we becoming more alive to our human (and spiritual) experience, or using food to deaden our senses? 

WEEK 3
Food Is … Connection to the world
We may not think of it much, but how we eat affects how we show up in the world … and how we impact the earth (it even affects the future of the world, but I don’t want to freak you out too much ;-)). This week, we’ll explore that impact.

WEEK 4
Food Is … Life
The foods we choose are either moving us up the continuum towards health and vibrancy, or down the continuum towards sickness. Despite our desensitization to this reality, there really is no "neutral ground." This week we’ll look at some sound nutritional truths -- and put to bed some myths and misunderstandings -- so you’ll have a clear picture of how what you’re putting in your body is affecting your current, and future, health.

WEEK 5
Food Is … Common ground
In today’s culture, food is highly politicized and polarizing … people are drawn towards certain labels which ends up isolating us from one another. But that’s not the way food was meant to be. This week we’ll look at how a nourishing plate can become a place of common ground, while still allowing -- and celebrating -- individual differences.

WEEK 6
Food Is … Joy
I used to equate "eating healthy" with deprivation and "enjoying" with overindulgence. Yet I discovered a wide swath of fertile ground in between where we can live richly, and find joy and contentment around the table. This week we’ll look at how to claim that joy and live in that rich "in-between."

WEEK 7
Food Is … Meaningfully seasonal
Real food has a lot to teach us. Of how the patterns in the growing seasons mimic the seasons in our own lives, and even the larger arc of life itself. This week we’ll look at how we’re nourished by the different "seasons" in food -- both literally, and metaphorically in terms of abundance and moderation, celebration and everyday.

WEEK 8
Food Is … Our legacy
This week takes us full circle, recognizing that what we eat not only affects our own life and the way we impact the world, it also shapes the pattern -- and relationship -- with food that our children (and the children within our influence) will take with them into the next generation. This week will also equip you to go out and have the conversations that move the needle for others too.

By the end of our 8 weeks together, you will:

  • Experience joy and contentment every time you eat, and a more meaningful connection to those around you
  • Have solid know-how to navigate shifting advice and food fads, and peace of mind that you’re making the right choices
  • Enjoy a healthier, more vibrant -- and likely longer -- life
